When I was at school, I had an art teacher who ran a series of ceramics classes in her own time so that I could tick off the ‘skill’ section of my Duke of Edinburgh Award. I loved it, and my dad still has the vase I made. I think I’ve always known that wasn’t the end of ceramics for me.
With a career in journalism and then human resources, I’ve not come to ceramics from a typical arts background. But since that first experience at school, ceramics has always been there in my background, and recently something prompted me to start exploring it further. The fact it’s so different to my “day” job makes it even more rewarding.
Based in Australia, Lucy Jane Ceramics is about producing handmade, functional ceramics that bring enjoyment to those who use them. I want to create beautiful and sustainable everyday objects that you want to keep on your shelves; not in your kitchen cupboards.
I love being outdoors; I’m always in search of the next best view, and I find these influences creep into my pieces - a gentle nudge to pause, look out the window, and explore. I hope my pieces can evoke similar in you.
